Contaminated Infant Food Formula 婴幼儿奶粉事件
An infant food formula produced by San Lu Group has led to kidney stones in hundreds of young children. Tests point to the main contaminant being melamine(三聚氰胺), a chemical substance rich in nitrogen. Regulators believe the chemical was added to the infant formula to push up levels of protein in order to meet relevant standards. This chemical makes milk appear rich in protein during quality tests, but can also cause kidney problems. Melamine is used to make plates, bowls, mugs and sundry other products but is banned from being used in the food industry. Some Chinese press reports have said the scam had been going on for years, with the country's chaotic and corrupt food safety system unable to detect or prevent it.
