The Olympic Games came to a close with a grand closing ceremony at the State Stadium? Bird Nest\" last night in Beijing. China won the most gold medals at the Beijing Games with 51, more than they did total medals in Atlanta (50).
The overall medal count was won by the United States for the fourth consecutive Olympics. The U.S. earned 110 medals, compared to China's 100.
While we are basking in the great pride we take in the success of the Olympic Games we should contemplate the mass sports movement. The government spends too much money grooming the fielding athelets for the Olympic Games since they are very young.I watched a TV program on CCTV ,an interview with the Chinese coaches for the American gymnast medalist Shawn. They run a gymnast traning school where Shawn got her training with other American kids. They said in the United states most American athelets get their training in such schools. The government doesn't invest much money for the preparation the athletes need for the Olympic Games. So i have the question\" Is it worthwhile to trade the top gold medal tally with lack of mass sports movement?\" Many schools in the countryside or remote areas are lack of basic necessities for sports class. Is it time for the government to scoop some money from he professional training for the poor school kids in those areas? We can understand better when we read the following facts:
Per capita, China won one gold medal for every 25 million people in the country. The United States' per capita rate was one gold for every 8.5 million. The tiny island nation of Jamaica, which won a staggering six golds in Beijing, had a per capita rate of one gold for every 450,000 residents. Had China won at that rate, the country would have earned 2,889 golds.
It is high time for us to remember thses facts while we celebrating our great success in the Olympic Games. We should make everyone fit and healthy. That is the absolute purpose of the Olympic spirits. |
