Asia’s amazing malls
These huge Asian malls have food, entertainment and more
More than just a place to shop, these Asian malls – among the largest in the world – are entertainment destinations. Shoppers can find not only spacious indoor shopping areas but also ice-skating rinks, indoor atriums, amusement park and more.
Big debut in Dubai
Located in the shadow of the world’s tallest building, one of the world’s largest shopping centers – the Dubai Mall – just open this year. Under one roof, shoppers will find several distinct shopping areas, including a gold souk with 220 stores. It has retail space for 1,200 stores in its 500,000-square-meter area. The mall’s centerpiece – a large aquarium with walk-through glass tunnels – will bring shoppers eye to eye with sharks, stingrays and other marine species.
Firsts for the Philippines
The Philippines claims three of the world’s largest malls thanks to one man: Henry Sy, a Chinese-Filipino entrepreneur. His company, SM Prime Holdings, Inc., has 30 malls in the Philippines, including the SM Mall of Asia. This mall, which opened in 2006, introduced many “firsts” to the Philippines, including an Olympic-size ice-skating rink and an IMAX theater. The mall has golf carts to accommodate those who need help moving around.

Charming China’s consumers
In China, mall developers are racing to build malls for China’s billion-plus consumers: According to Time, 500 malls opened in China between 2002 and 2007. Four of them have captured coveted spots on the list of the world’s ten largest malls. The largest, the south China Mall in Dongguan, Guangdong province, includes 660,000 square meters of retail space. Yet stores take second place to stunning surroundings that imitate famous cities: Paris, with an 85-foot replica of the Arc de Triomphe; Hollywood; Amsterdam and others. Not for from the South China Mall sits the Grandview Mall in Guangzhou. Besides shopping space, the Grandview Mall also integrates a 48-story hotel and 25-story office building into his site. Two more mall in Beijing round out China’s contribution to the list. The Golden Resources Mall boasts 1,000 stores that sell internationally known name brands. The suburban Beijing Mall has a man-made beach and parking for 8,000 cars.
New malls continue to spring up across Asia. They offer not only stores but also amazing attractions to keep consumers coming back. |
