Chongyang Festival falls on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month so it is also called The Double Ninth Festival in China.
The festival is based on the theory of Yin and Yang, the two opposing principles in nature. Yin is feminine, negative principle, while Yang is masculine and positive. In ancient times people believed that all natural phenomena could be explained by this theory. Numbers were also related to this theory. Even numbers belonged to Yin and odd numbers to Yang. The ninth day of the ninth lunar month is a day when the two Yang numbers meet. So it is called Chong Yang. Chong means double in Chinese. Chong Yang has been an important festival since ancient times.
Autumn is the best season to climb mountains, as the weather is pleasant, the sky clear and the air crisp. People revel in the beautiful autumn scenes, and enjoy the fresh air and warm sunshine. As a pastime, mountain climbing is good for keeping fit. The fragrant cornel or dogwood(山茱萸) can be used as herbal medicine. It may not possess the magic to exorcise evil spirits, but it does repel mosquitoes. That is why mountain climbers often carry a bundle of the plant.
Chrysanthemums are in full bloom in autumn. Chrysanthemum shows are usually held in big cities across China and attract numerous visitors, because the chrysanthemum is eulogized as the “gentleman” of flowers. Chrysanthemum tea is believed to purify the heart and improve eyesight.
